The Gauteng Education Department (GDE) received a United Nations Public Service Awards for having distinguished itself in service delivery. The award ceremony was held at Seoul, South Korea, form the 23th to 26th June 2014.
The GDE received the award for its special intervention project called the Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP). The programme has been identified as the best public service education initiative on the continent and the world. SSIP scooped the first prize in the category of Improving the Delivery of Public Service.
The SSIP was introduced to address the problem of poor learner achievement in key subjects in under-performing schools which were not achieving a provincial average targets. The objectives for SSIP were to sustain improvement of education in Gauteng’s Grade 12 pass rate in Mathematics and Science in priority schools which were not achieving a minimum acceptable pass rate.
This programme runs on weekends and during school vacations in 155 locations mainly for 60 000 Grade 12 learners from 431 high schools serving economically disadvantaged communities. The SSIP has 140 physical sites, most of which are public schools which are chosen as they are centrally located and can be reached by most participants. All educational, logistical and technical resources and services are provided by the department.
SSIP has improved passing rate in Mathematics from 40% in 2011 to 61% in 2013 whereas the Physical Science pass rate has improved from 41% in 2011 to 65% in 2013.
SSIP has successfully improved the quality of Education in priority schools in Gauteng and also become embedded as part of the school routine.
